As many of you may know, in Germany from June to August 2022 there is a 9 euro ticket that allows the passenger to travel all month with the ticket throughout Germany by public transport, including buses, Trains and trams etc. excluding the IC, EC or ICE high-speed trains.

Sounds like an incredibly good offer? Yes, but why is this happening and who can benefit from it?

First, let’s outline the original purpose of the €9 ticket:

To counteract the rising energy costs caused by the war in Ukraine and to encourage Germans to use less cars and more public transport, the federal government is introducing a special discounted flat-rate monthly ticket valid throughout the country. The energy cost relief package (estimated to cost 2.5 billion Euros) will subsidize public rail and bus operators to compensate for the loss of ticket revenue.
